Bio

Mengyao Liang is a visual artist who has exhibited photo-based works in Canada and China since 2010. Liang was born in China and lived in Beijing before moving to Canada in 2009. Liang’s photography and film works in contemporary art are motivated by her inner desire to speak and raise awareness of the issues affecting minority groups.

Liang is a storyteller. Her work aims to explore how political actions can affect peoples’ lives over time. From her long-term ongoing documentary Coming Home to her recent film Mr. Old Liang, Liang combines photography and film together to reflect the post-political action period in China. Her artwork is not necessarily made for people that have a deep understanding of art, but more so for the general public. Through the medium of photography and film, Liang inquires into trauma, loss, political issues, as well as the reconciliation between China and Tibet.
